The Essential Checklist for Writers

Do you listen to music when you’re writing? Light a candle? Pour yourself some water or a glass of wine?

We all have different habits when it comes to writing and things that get us in the mood to write. And it’s great! But, more to the point — how many times have you found yourself in the middle of a writing project only to reach for your drink to find it not there? Or wanting to turn on music and missing your headphones? Ya, us too.

With it being NaNoWriMo, we thought we’d compile an essential list of things to do to get in the writing mood and keep you from forgetting the essentials that help you be the most productive!

  1. Put on your writing playlist
  2. Grab your favourite drink
  3. Have a snack ready
  4. Crack your knuckles
  5. Put your phone on silent
  6. Light a soothing candle
  7. Grab your headphones
  8. Set a timer
  9. Find a writing prompt
  10. Get out your plot outline
  11. Get out your mood board
  12. Put on your fuzzy socks or slippers
  13. Text your writing buddy for motivation
  14. Set writing goal
  15. Find a writing spot
  16. Do some stretches – you’ll be sitting for a while
  17. Refer to your character outlines
  18. Have a pen ready for those impromptu ideas
  19. Take a 5 minute break to stretch your legs
  20. Turn off notifications on your computer
  21. Put up a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign
  22. Hide page numbers
